The legendary ‘Screenplay King’ passed away at 73 after a massive heart attack on Saturday morning, despite intensive treatment at a private hospital on Greams Road. Thousands of fans lined the funeral procession route from Valluvar Kottam in Nungambakkam to Besant Nagar, offering flowers and tearful tributes to the beloved director.
Final rites were performed at his Nungambakkam residence as per family traditions before a police guard of honour escorted the flower adorned casket through major city roads. His son Shanthanu performed the last rites at the crematorium in the presence of family, friends, and the Tamil film fraternity. Leading actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan, Trisha, and Nayanthara, along with top directors, producers, and technicians, paid homage.
Chief Minister Vijay, DMK president M K Stalin, ministers, and MLAs visited Bhagyaraj’s residence to offer condolences to the family. On Saturday, CM Vijay announced that the veteran would be laid to rest with full state honours, recognizing his immense contribution to Tamil cinema. Throughout the day, thousands of fans queued for hours near Valluvar Kottam to pay their last respects to the iconic filmmaker and actor.

His sudden demise after a morning walk shocked the industry and fans alike.
