Tension prevailed in Tadipatri again on Friday after former YSR Congress party MLA Kethireddy Peddareddy’s proposed protest against alleged attacks on party workers led to a confrontation between police and his supporters.
Police had stepped up security after TDP leader JC Prabhakar Reddy called upon party workers to mobilise, raising concerns over possible clashes between rival political groups.
As police attempted to shift Peddareddy from Tadipatri to Anantapur as a preventive measure, YSRCP leaders and supporters resisted the move.
Protesters placed cement benches in front of the police vehicle to prevent it from leaving with the former MLA, leading to a scuffle between police personnel and demonstrators.
With the situation turning tense, police resorted to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Authorities later allowed Peddareddy to remain at his residence but deployed heavy police security around the premises.
Peddareddy had earlier announced that he would stage a protest at Gandhi Junction against what he alleged were attacks by TDP activists in Tadipatri.
TDP leaders, however, criticised the proposed protest, arguing that leaders associated with the YSRCP, during its tenure in power, had allegedly targeted TDP workers and therefore had no moral right to launch such an agitation. They warned that they would oppose the proposed protest.
Anticipating possible law and order issues, police imposed extensive security arrangements across Tadipatri.
A large contingent of police personnel was deployed around Peddareddy’s residence to prevent him from leaving, while additional forces were stationed at key junctions across the town to monitor the situation and prevent any untoward incidents.
