Telugu Desam Party working president and Andhra Pradesh IT minister Nara Lokesh says there is nothing unusual about politicians in public life facing criminal cases; and they do not mean they are criminals.
Addressing party workers, Lokesh said that criminal cases against political leaders are common in public life and often arise from protests and agitations undertaken in the interest of the people.
Lokesh said he once believed that the 23 cases registered against him were a large number until he learnt that senior TDP leader JC Prabhakar Reddy was facing 96 cases.
He later had a light-hearted discussion with Bandi Sanjay, who jokingly told him that he had 107 cases pending against him.
He said many political leaders continue to fight for public causes despite facing numerous criminal cases, describing such cases as evidence of their commitment to public service.
Lokesh explained that police often register cases against political leaders when they organise protests, road blockades, demonstrations and other agitations highlighting public issues.
Some leaders, he said, even undergo imprisonment and emerge politically stronger, adding that leaders with a large number of protest-related cases often enjoy greater public support.
At the same time, Lokesh clarified that cases arising out of corruption or financial scandals were entirely different from those registered during democratic political protests and should not be equated.
Praising Bandi Sanjay, he said the Union Minister continues to remain actively engaged in public service despite facing numerous criminal cases.
Lokesh also announced that the Telugu Desam Party would launch a statewide door-to-door public outreach campaign from July 10 as part of its organisational programme.
