A Haryana resort has landed in trouble after a customer complained that he was charged more than the printed price for a bottle of Mountain Dew during a small party.
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Jhajjar, has now ordered Lali Resort to refund Rs 75 and pay Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental agony, harassment and litigation expenses. What the case was aboutThe complaint was filed by Parveen Chhotu, a resident of Village Bhindawas in Jhajjar district.According to the case file, he and his friends had visited Lali Resort on 14 September 2025 for a get-together. During the outing, they ordered five 500 ml bottles of a soft drink labelled “Dew”, each carrying a printed price of Rs 35.But when the bill was prepared, the resort allegedly charged Rs 50 per bottle instead. That meant an extra Rs 15 on each bottle, adding up to Rs 75 in total. The overall bill for the outing came to Rs 1,290.Complaint at the counterParveen objected on the spot and asked the resort not to charge more than the printed price. But according to the complaint, the staff did not correct the bill. He alleged that they misbehaved with him and his friends instead of addressing the issue. The matter did not end there. On 19 September 2025, he sent a legal notice to the resort asking for a refund of the excess amount. No reply came back. With no resolution in sight, he moved the consumer commission in December 2025.What he asked forIn his complaint, Parveen sought a refund of the full Rs 1,290 bill amount. He also claimed Rs 20,000 for mental agony and harassment, along with Rs 21,000 towards litigation expenses. The case then moved ahead without the resort taking part. What the commission foundLali Resort was served notice but did not appear before the commission. It was later proceeded ex parte on 29 January 2026.The complainant then filed his affidavit and supporting documents, including the bill and legal notice. After going through the record, the bench said the bill clearly showed that the resort had charged Rs 50 per bottle against the printed price of Rs 35.The commission also noted that the complainant had repeatedly asked for a refund, but the resort had not responded.Since the resort chose not to contest the case, the complainant’s evidence remained unrebutted. The final orderThe commission held that Lali Resort had committed a deficiency in service. It ordered the resort to pay Rs 75, the excess amount charged on the cold drinks, along with simple interest at 9 per cent per annum from 5 December 2025, the date of filing of the complaint, until payment is made.It also directed the resort to pay Rs 10,000 as a lump sum towards mental agony, harassment and litigation expenses. What happens nextThe commission said the amount must be paid within 40 days of the order. If the resort fails to do that, the award will carry simple interest at 12 per cent per annum from 5 December 2025 until full payment. The order was announced in open commission on 15 June 2026 and signed by the full bench.
