The Telugu Desam Party-led coalition government in Andhra Pradesh has granted permission for prosecution of YSR Congress party leader Kodali Nani in a case filed in 2021, when he was a minister in the cabinet of YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. The case date
s back to February 2021, when the Model Code of Conduct was in force for the panchayat elections.
During that period, Kodali Nani allegedly made controversial remarks against Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu and then State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar.
Nani allegedly called for Chandrababu Naidu to be driven out of the state and made comments attributing ulterior motives to the State Election Commissioner.
Following complaints that the remarks violated the election code, the then Joint Commissioner of the State Election Commission submitted a report to the Krishna district police chief recommending action against the minister.
Based on the report, Gudivada police registered a case against Kodali Nani on February 16, 2021, after obtaining permission from a local court.
Since Kodali Nani was serving as a minister at the time, prosecution sanction from the government was required before the court could proceed with the case.
The previous YSRCP government did not grant permission for prosecution, resulting in the court refusing to take cognizance of the charges despite the police filing a chargesheet. Consequently, the case remained pending for several years.
Recently, the Krishna district Collector forwarded fresh proposals to the government regarding the matter.
After examining the records and concluding that prima facie evidence existed, the government approved prosecution against Kodali Nani.
With the sanction now in place, judicial proceedings in the case are expected to commence in the competent court.
