For almost 28 years, Raymond LeDreau served as an unofficial caretaker of Anacapa Island, building a solitary life shaped by war, loss and survival. A veteran of the Spanish-American War, he later endured the death of his wife during the 1918 influenza pandemic. He made a living by lobster fishing and, during Prohibition, by guarding shipments of liquor. At 80, a fall from a cliff forced him to leave the island for the mainland, where he eventually disappeared. Frenchy’s Cove on West Anacapa Island now bears his name in tribute.
