A 33-year-old Telugu man, Venkatesh Doppalaudi, was found dead in Kansas after his car was swept away by floodwaters in Sumner County. The incident took place on Saturday
. Rescue efforts began immediately after locals reported seeing a vehicle enter the water with someone still inside.
Though the car was later found, the driver could not be located at first. The rescue operation was suspended overnight and resumed the next day.
On Sunday, the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office said it had recovered the body of the missing driver.
Deputies had responded to the 600 block of South Oliver Road after receiving a report about a submerged vehicle on the west side of a bridge.
A witness told deputies that they saw the vehicle go into the water and that someone was still inside. However, the speed and force of the floodwaters prevented the Wellington Fire Department from entering the water.
The Kansas Highway Patrol Air Unit assisted in the search, along with a police drone. Venkatesh’s body was found at 12:19 pm on Sunday, about a quarter mile downstream from Oliver Road.
Doppalaudi was living in Omaha, Nebraska, and was originally from Andhra Pradesh.
After he was reported missing, his family in India reached out to local leaders seeking help.
It is not yet clear why Doppalaudi was in Kansas, which had been under severe flash flood alerts due to continuous rain.
A friend said his destination was not Kansas. He was reportedly travelling from Houston and had chosen a non-toll route.
He may have been caught in the floodwaters while driving on a local road near Wellington.
