Rajamoulis Varanasi Set To Close Overseas Distribution Deal

Recent comments by the filmmaker at an event in France, coupled with actor Prithviraj Sukumaran describing the project as so massive that “big is an understatement,” have only heightened curiosity around the film.

While the project continues to dominate online discussions, business negotiations have also begun behind the scenes.

Sources say director Rajamouli and producer K. L. Narayana have initiated discussions for various theatrical distribution deals, with the overseas rights likely to become the first major agreement to be finalised.

According to industry sources, the initial asking price for the overseas rights discouraged several regular Telugu film distributors operating in international markets. As a result, only a handful of players remained in the race.

Among them, Dubai-based Phars Films has emerged as the frontrunner.

The company has previously handled the overseas distribution of several Rajamouli and Prabhas films and is now in advanced negotiations to acquire the rights for Varanasi.

Sources close to the discussions say both parties have softened their positions during the negotiations.

While the final valuation remains undisclosed, the deal is said to be in its final stages, with formal paperwork expected to be completed soon.

Scheduled for release on April 7, 2027, Varanasi is being mounted as a globe-trotting adventure drama that reportedly blends elements of the Ramayana with time travel and fantasy.

The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj and Prithviraj Sukumaran in key roles.
