The YSR Congress Party, headed by former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, has several firebrand leaders who not only enjoy strong influence in their respective constituencies but also have a strong voice to counter political rivals in an aggressive tone.
The party has seen leaders like Kodali Nani, Perni Nani, Ambati Rambabu, R K Roja, Nallapureddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy, Kakani Goverdhan Reddy, Gudivada Amarnath and Anil Kumar Yadav, who are known for their aggressive attacks on rivals in their respective areas.
Now, the party seems to be witnessing the rise of another such firebrand leader in Penamaluru constituency of Krishna district.
He is Devabhaktuni Chakravarthy, the newly appointed YSRCP in-charge of the constituency, who has emerged as the centre of attention with his no-holds-barred attack on sitting TDP MLA Bode Prasad.
The face-off between Bode Prasad and Chakravarthy has generated considerable political interest, with observers drawing comparisons between Chakravarthy’s aggressive political style and that of former minister Kodali Nani.
In the 2024 Assembly elections, former minister Jogi Ramesh contested from Penamaluru on behalf of the YSRCP but was defeated. Since then, Jagan Mohan Reddy had been looking for a suitable leader to strengthen the party in the constituency.
The party eventually entrusted the responsibility to Devabhaktuni Chakravarthy, appointing him as the constituency in-charge with the expectation that he would build the organisation ahead of the next elections, which are still several years away.
Despite his appointment nearly two years ago, the YSRCP has not been particularly active in the constituency. However, recent developments have thrust Chakravarthy into the political spotlight.
The immediate trigger for the latest political confrontation was Chakravarthy’s decision to renovate a roadside statue of his grandfather, who was earlier associated with politics in the constituency.
As part of his ongoing grassroots outreach programmes, Chakravarthy focused on restoring the statue, prompting the ruling TDP to react swiftly. According to reports, TDP MLA Bode Prasad mobilised party workers to the site.
A police complaint was also lodged, alleging that the pedestal associated with the statue had been damaged in an apparent attempt to prevent Chakravarthy from proceeding with the restoration work.
Rather than backing down, Chakravarthy staged a protest on the road and launched a sharp attack on the TDP legislator.
His confrontational approach and outspoken criticism of political opponents have attracted public attention and enthused the party cadre.
Political observers say Chakravarthy’s aggressive posture has made him one of the more prominent new faces in the YSRCP’s Krishna district leadership.
The developments over the past two days have sparked discussions in political circles over whether Chakravarthy could emerge as another Kodali Nani-like figure in Krishna district politics.
Like Kodali Nani, Chakravarthy has adopted an assertive style of politics, issuing strong warnings to political rivals and taking an uncompromising stand against the ruling party during public confrontations.
