With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) determined to strengthen its position in Telangana ahead of the next assembly elections, speculation is mounting over the party’s likely representation from the state in the anticipated expansion and reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers.
According to sources, the Telangana BJP is likely to get an additional berth in the Central cabinet. There is also a possibility of some changes in the representation of Telangana BJP.
At present, Telangana is represented by two Union ministers. Secunderabad MP G Kishan Reddy serves as a cabinet minister, while Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar is a minister of state.
Besides the eight Lok Sabha MPs elected from Telangana, senior BJP leader Dr K Laxman represents Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha.
According to party sources, the central leadership has also been closely monitoring internal differences among senior state leaders, which has led to a bad image for the party.
If the reports are true, Bandi Sanjay might be dropped out of the cabinet, in the wake of the recent controversy involving his son Bandi Bageerath. There are also complaints against him that he is interfering in the constituencies of other BJP leaders.
Sources said several BJP MPs from Telangana are said to be lobbying for a place in the union cabinet. Among the prominent names being discussed are Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender, Mahabubnagar MP D K Aruna, Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind and Adilabad MP G Nagesh.
However, party circles indicate that Eatala Rajender and D K Aruna are currently among the frontrunners.
“If Sanjay is dropped, Eatala might get a chance. And if Modi wants to accommodate another Telangana MP, Aruna might be the favourite,” sources said.
Kishan Reddy might retain his cabinet berth, but might lose his portfolio. He might be shifted to another department.
“If the BJP leadership feels that it may not be right to give the berth to another Reddy, then Aruna may not get the chance and it might to go Nagesh, an ST,” sources said.
