Film budgets have gone up heavily. Producers are trying to cut costs in many areas, but the same correction is not happening when it comes to heroes’ remuneration.
How much does a hero take from a big film’s budget? How much is finally left for the producer? Dil Raju has now explained this with a clear example.
“When a film is made with Rs 300 crore, nearly Rs 120 crore goes only as the hero’s remuneration. If a distributor buys it as a crazy project, he faces losses. If it is released through third parties or hires, exhibitors face losses. Finally, in the industry, the losses are being shared only by three people — producer, distributor and exhibitor,” Dil Raju said.
After looking at these calculations, Dil Raju said he is now working only with heroes who understand him and his economics.
According to him, many heroes are still not able to understand the present market situation.
“Even if a film flops, I am first checking how much minimum amount I can recover. From there, I am starting discussions with the hero. I am explaining that market calculations have completely changed. I am telling them in advance how much theatrical revenue and non-theatrical revenue can come. Then I am discussing how we can share that amount. Some heroes are understanding it, and some are not. I am travelling only with those who understand. I am clearly telling them how much I can give,” he said.
Dil Raju said that just as single screens are moving from the rental system to the percentage system, heroes also should move from fixed remuneration to a sharing system.
He pointed out that big heroes in Bollywood have already moved to the sharing model. He said he is making films with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar under the sharing system.
According to Dil Raju, if heroes also move to the sharing system, they will take more responsibility for the film. He believes that this will automatically help bring the budget under control.
