Renowned filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has finally addressed the box office journey of Dunki, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer that released after a blockbuster year for the actor.
The comedy drama, which also features Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal in key roles, opened to mixed reviews from critics and viewers. Despite the divided response, Dunki managed to collect close to Rs 470 crore globally, making it a profitable venture by industry standards.
Many trade analysts and fans, however, saw Dunki as an underperformer given Shah Rukh Khan’s historic 2023 run. With Pathaan and Jawan both crossing the Rs 1,000 crore mark worldwide, expectations were sky-high for his collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani. The contrast between those massive hits and Dunki’s relatively modest total led to debates around the film’s commercial standing.
In a recent podcast, Rajkumar Hirani shared his take on why Dunki could not replicate the success of his earlier films like 3 Idiots and PK. He pointed out that the film’s core subject, illegal immigration and the struggles around visas connects with a specific section of audiences rather than the entire country. Unlike 3 Idiots, which tapped into India’s education system and resonated across age groups, Dunki’s theme had limited universal reliability.
Hirani’s candid explanation sheds light on how subject choice impacts box office reach, even with a superstar like Shah Rukh Khan leading the film. While Dunki still emerged as a commercial success with Rs 470 crore worldwide, the director believes its niche theme kept it from becoming the pan India phenomenon his previous blockbusters were.
