Telugu Desam Party MP from Eluru parliamentary constituency Putta Mahesh Yadav has come under intense criticism on social media after urging police to go easy on the enforcement of drunk driving cases.
Several netizens came down heavily on the MP for supporting the drunk drivers, stating that he lacks moral authority to make such a plea in light of the drug case in which he has been named.
The controversy erupted after Mahesh, speaking at a Disha review meeting in Eluru district, requested police officials to exercise discretion while conducting drunk driving checks in villages.
The MP said strict enforcement was generating public resentment against the ruling NDA government and creating political problems for local TDP leaders.
Addressing the district Superintendent of Police, Mahesh said he receives nearly 30 phone calls every day regarding drunk driving cases and complained that motorists in villages were being booked and fined heavily.
While stating that police should act according to the law, he urged officials to ensure that enforcement did not translate into anti-government sentiment.
He also requested the police to be considerate towards local TDP mandal presidents and party workers while implementing the rules.
His remarks quickly drew sharp reactions online, with social media users pointing to the Hyderabad farmhouse drugs case in which Mahesh is facing investigation.
They questioned how a public representative accused in a narcotics-related case could seek relaxation in the enforcement of traffic laws aimed at preventing accidents caused by intoxicated driving.
Mahesh was among those detained during a raid conducted by the Telangana Police’s Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) at a farmhouse in Moinabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad in March this year.
Police subsequently said his blood sample tested positive for methamphetamine and registered a case under the NDPS Act, though the investigation is continuing and no court has determined his guilt.
Following the incident, the Telugu Desam Party issued a show-cause notice to Mahesh and reportedly asked him to stay away from party activities until his name was cleared.
Mahesh, however, has consistently denied consuming drugs.
He has maintained that he had attended the farmhouse only for a dinner meeting, claimed he had never used narcotic substances, and submitted independent medical test reports in support of his defence. The police investigation and related legal proceedings are still pending.
Against this backdrop, Mahesh’s appeal for a softer approach towards drunk driving enforcement has fuelled political criticism, with opposition supporters and several social media users accusing the MP of sending the wrong message on road safety.
Many posts contrasted his comments with the state’s sustained campaign against drunken driving and substance abuse, arguing that elected representatives should instead endorse strict enforcement of the law.
