Senior YSR Congress Party leader and former Andhra Pradesh minister Ambati Rambabu appears to be emerging as a prominent Kapu face of the party.
He has reportedly been entrusted with the task of spearheading the party’s campaign among the Kapu community to strengthen its voter base.
This is evident from the way Ambati has been taking the lead in protests and agitations on issues concerning the Kapus.
Sources said YSRCP chief and former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has given him full autonomy to highlight issues related to the Kapu community.
On Wednesday, Ambati Rambabu announced that he would undertake a two-day “Vinati Padayatra” from his residence in Guntur to the Director General of Police’s office in Mangalagiri on July 29.
He said the march would be held to protest his alleged illegal arrest and to demand action against those responsible for attacking his residence.
Rambabu added that he would personally submit a memorandum to the DGP seeking action against those involved. He reiterated that he would continue his legal battle against the police officials concerned.
Referring to the alleged custodial death of rowdy-sheeter Gade Sai Krishna, Ambati alleged that the Special Investigation Team probing the case was attempting to shield former Krishnalanka Circle Inspector Nagaraju instead of uncovering the truth.
He demanded that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation for an impartial probe.
He alleged that the SIT’s investigation was aimed at protecting the accused officer and destroying crucial evidence.
Referring to the arrest of former CI Nagaraju, Ambati questioned why the officer was not arrested immediately after a case was registered against him on June 19.
“If a case was registered on June 19, why was Nagaraju arrested only on June 23? The intervening days were allegedly used for negotiations and assurances that he would be protected before a token arrest was staged,” Rambabu alleged.
He further accused the police of allowing crucial CCTV footage from the Krishnalanka police station to disappear, despite Supreme Court directions mandating that surveillance footage from police stations be preserved for 18 months.
Rambabu claimed that the footage went missing only after the SIT was constituted and questioned why recordings covering nearly a year had allegedly been deleted.
“The SIT should explain how such vital evidence vanished. Only a CBI investigation can expose the truth, including the role of senior police officers and allegations regarding the accumulation of disproportionate assets by the former circle inspector,” he said.
The former minister also criticised Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s handling of the issue.
He alleged that while Jana Sena leaders had publicly expressed sympathy for Sai Krishna’s family, party supporters were simultaneously protesting against Nagaraju’s arrest.
“We are not supporting Sai Krishna because of his background. We are fighting because a human life was allegedly lost due to custodial torture. Restoring public confidence in the police system has become an urgent challenge,” Rambabu said.
