A tourist visa interview turned into a shocker after a US visa officer asked one simple question: “Did you watch yesterday’s FIFA match?”
The applicant had claimed that he wanted to travel to the United States to watch the FIFA final. But when the officer asked whether he had watched the previous night’s match, he said no.
The officer then asked if he had watched any match at all. Again, the answer was no.
The result was obvious. His visa was denied.
A Reddit user shared this incident from his visa interview experience at the US Consulate in Delhi. While his own visa was approved, he said he witnessed several rejections before his turn and many of them looked predictable.
According to him, several applicants failed because they could not convincingly explain the real purpose of their US visit.
In another case, an applicant said he wanted to spend three days in New York and four days in Chicago. When asked why he chose New York, he simply replied, “Because it is famous.”
That answer did not help. His visa was also denied.
The Redditor also recalled a man who was rejected for the fourth time. The officer reportedly told him not to apply again unless he had something new to add. The man started arguing and pleading, after which security had to escort him out.
The Redditor then shared details of his own successful interview. He said he works as a software engineer in Bengaluru and earns around Rs 2 lakh per month. His father runs a well-established business, and his family owns multiple properties.
He said he was funding his own US trip and wanted to visit a friend in Seattle.
When asked about his travel plan, he gave a clear answer. He said he wanted to visit Pike Place Market and Lake Union, and that skydiving would be the highlight of his trip.
The officer also asked why he had chosen Seattle. The Redditor explained that he had originally planned to visit Georgia, where his college friend was doing her master’s. After graduation, she moved to Seattle and started working there as a software engineer.
The visa officer then asked whether the friend was his fiancée or girlfriend. He said she was just a friend.
The officer also checked his international travel history, which included Canada, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
Sharing his takeaway, the Redditor said confidence plays a major role in a visa interview. He advised applicants to stay calm, answer honestly, avoid sounding desperate and listen carefully to the officer’s questions.
His message was simple: a weak travel story can collapse in seconds, but a clear and honest plan can make all the difference.
