There is a discussion in political circles that TDP MP M Sribharat is playing a dominant role in Visakhapatnam district. This talk is not only within the TDP, but also outside the party
.
Visakhapatnam district does not have a minister from the region. Because of this, MP Sribharat is reportedly looking after many issues himself.
Though there are senior MLAs with political experience, Sribharat, who became MP for the first time, appears to be having the final say in many matters. Even among officials, his words are said to be carrying weight.
Recently, the Visakhapatnam MP spoke to the media about the proposed data centre and also about setting up liquor shops on beaches in the name of beach shacks.
His comments have angered environmental activists and women’s groups.
Sribharat said the data centre would not harm the environment. However, local environmental activist Bolisetty Satyanarayana strongly objected to this claim.
He said that in foreign countries, data centres are not being set up near residential areas and are being strongly opposed.
He also alleged that the data centre is being built without proper environmental permissions.
He warned that the data centre could lead to water shortage and power shortage in Visakhapatnam.
He also suggested that if the MP is so keen on beach shacks, he should set them up inside his own educational institution.
Women’s groups have also made it clear that they will oppose liquor sales on beaches.
There is now a debate over the MP’s style of functioning.
Critics say he is speaking as if the decisions of the ruling party are final and there is no need to listen to opposition parties or public organisations.
At the same time, some people within the TDP are whispering that Visakhapatnam does not need a separate minister, as the MP himself is looking after everything.
