Lionel Messi was seen in tears after scoring the opening goal in Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J match against Algeria on Monday night.
The Argentine captain went on to score a hat-trick, his first in World Cup history, while also equalling Miroslav Klose’s record for the most goals in the tournament.
Although fans were delighted to see Messi at his brilliant best, his emotional reaction after the first goal left many wondering what had happened.
Speaking after Argentina’s 3-0 victory, the 38-year-old revealed that he had endured a difficult period before the match. He clarified that his tears were related to a personal matter and had nothing to do with football.
“It had nothing to do with football. I went through some difficult days,” Messi said. “It was something completely unrelated to sport. I had been through a complicated period.”
Messi did not reveal further details about the situation but thanked his teammates and the entire Argentine delegation for standing by him.
“I am grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates. They made a great effort to ensure that I was doing well,” he added.
Reflecting on his career and current form, Messi described this phase as the “cherry on top” of everything he had achieved over the years.
“It makes me very happy to have experienced everything that came my way. What I am experiencing now is the cherry on top,” he said.
“I am very happy and grateful for this wonderful group. I am enjoying it so much.”
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni was also full of praise for Messi after the defending champions began their World Cup campaign with a dominant victory over Algeria.
“I am at a loss for words about Leo. What can I say? He is incredible,” Scaloni said.
