Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member from Anakapalle in Andhra Pradesh, C M Ramesh, who is widely known to be a close associate of Telugu Desam Party president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is said to have engineered a split among Trinamool Congre
ss MPs and persuaded them to move towards the saffron party.
According to reports in a section of the national media, the businessman-turned-politician made most of the calls to the TMC MPs and convinced them to switch their loyalties.
Ramesh openly admitted to a national daily that he had played a role in the defections.
“My skill is convincing people. All I need is a couple of hours, and I can convince anyone to join the BJP,” he said.
Ramesh said he had known most of the TMC MPs for a long time. As they regularly met in the Parliament canteen and elsewhere in the House, they had developed a close bond over the years. Some of them had even attended his daughter’s wedding celebrations.
However, Ramesh denied that money or positions were involved in the alleged defections.
“It is not about money. There is no post involved, and it is not commercial,” he said.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra acknowledged that Ramesh was her friend.
“He likes to remain politically relevant. Some of us stay politically relevant by working at the grassroots, while some remain relevant through strong networks. C M Ramesh always likes to be relevant,” Moitra said.
Political analysts are now wondering whether Ramesh could be asked to employ similar tactics in Andhra Pradesh in the coming years.
Apparently, his efforts are aimed at strengthening his position within the BJP and demonstrating his political usefulness to the party’s central leadership.
