A fresh political buzz has started in Telangana Congress circles. Senior Congress leader and Telangana party in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan may be sent to the Rajya Sabha from the state, and one sitting MP could reportedly be asked to resign for her
.
Meenakshi’s Rajya Sabha nomination from Madhya Pradesh was earlier rejected, creating a major controversy.
Congress leaders accused the BJP-led Centre and the Election Commission of acting unfairly. She later approached the Supreme Court, but did not get relief.
The Congress high command is said to have taken the issue very seriously, as Meenakshi is considered a close and trusted leader of Rahul Gandhi.
Now, the party leadership is reportedly exploring ways to send her to the Upper House from Telangana.
At present, Congress has four Rajya Sabha members from Telangana — Anil Kumar Yadav, Vem Narender Reddy, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Renuka Chowdhury.
According to party sources, Vem Narender Reddy, a close associate of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, may be asked to resign from his seat.
Revanth reportedly discussed the issue with Rahul Gandhi and offered to give one Rajya Sabha seat from Telangana to Meenakshi in the larger interest of the party.
The plan is said to be simple: Vem Narender Reddy would step down, and Meenakshi Natarajan would be elected unopposed from the vacant seat.
Interestingly, Vem Narender Reddy was elected to the Rajya Sabha only in March this year and took oath on April 16. But if the Congress plan goes through, he may have to give up the post within a very short time.
An official announcement is still awaited, but the reported move has already created intense discussion within Telangana Congress.
