Kangana Ranaut’s latest film Bharat Bhagya Vidhata has made a slow start at the box office, collecting around Rs 1 crore on its opening day.
The film was released across 2,181 shows and recorded an overall occupancy of about 11%.
Despite positive word of mouth, the film failed to attract strong footfalls on Day 1.
Bharat Bhagya Vidhata also faced competition from Diljit Dosanjh’s Main Vaapas Aaunga and Manoj Bajpayee’s Governor.
Main Vaapas Aaunga collected Rs 1.15 crore from 2,302 shows, while Governor earned around Rs 90 lakh from 1,427 shows.
The weak opening adds to Kangana’s long wait for a clear box-office hit. Her last major commercial success was Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2015.
Several of her later films, including Thalaivii and Emergency, failed to make a strong impact despite creating considerable buzz.
Her previous release, Emergency, opened at Rs 2.5 crore and finished its theatrical run with around Rs 23.81 crore.
Written and directed by Manoj Tapadia, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata is inspired by the events at Mumbai’s Cama Hospital during the 26/11 terror attacks. The film also stars Girija Oak, Smita Tambe and Esha Dey.
The film’s weekend performance will now be crucial.
Strong reviews and positive audience response could help it improve, but the opening-day numbers have clearly put pressure on the Kangana starrer.
