Peddi has come as a major relief for Ram Charan. In many ways, it can be considered his first solo success since Rangasthalam
.
Although RRR was a hit in between, it was a shared success involving Ram Charan, NTR, and director S.S. Rajamouli.
Therefore, after nearly eight years, Ram Charan has finally delivered a successful solo hero film that rests largely on his own shoulders.
The film has crossed the Rs 280 crore mark at the worldwide box office. While that is an impressive number, the limitation was that the movie was made on a very high budget.
Moreover, its performance outside the Telugu states, including overseas markets, was only moderate.
Despite these limitations, Peddi managed to get close to the safe zone mainly because of Ram Charan’s star power in the two Telugu states.
When a film receives mixed reactions and still continues to perform strongly at the box office, it usually indicates the strength of the lead actor’s pull.
Peddi has once again proved that Ram Charan has a strong fan base and the ability to attract audiences even when the word-of-mouth is divided.
Had the film been made with a budget that was at least Rs 100 crore lower, or had it performed better in non-Telugu markets, it could have emerged as a true pan-India success.
Nevertheless, the film has achieved its primary objective, with regard to Ram Charan. It has brought much-needed relief to Ram Charan’s career.
More importantly, Peddi has shown that after Rangasthalam, Ram Charan can still shoulder a film with his own star power.
The mixed talk did not stop audiences from turning up, and that itself is a significant positive for the actor.
Better support from other markets and tighter budget control could have made the result even stronger, but the film remains an important success for Ram Charan.
