Janhvi Kapoor’s portrayal of Achiyyamma in Peddi may have sparked a storm online, but the actress says she had complete faith in director Buchi Babu Sana’s vision.
The film faced heavy criticism over Janhvi’s hyper-sexualised presentation and certain controversial romantic scenes.
The backlash eventually forced the director to apologise and announce changes. Amid the row, Janhvi has now opened up about the one scene she was genuinely scared of performing.
Speaking to Beyond the Brief by District Movies, Janhvi said the director always has the final word on a film set.
“The director obviously gets the final word because he is the one who says cut,” she said, praising Buchi Babu for his rooted storytelling in Uppena.
When asked which scene made her feel proud, Janhvi immediately picked her entry sequence in Peddi.
She admitted that she was extremely nervous because the character was unlike anything she had played before.
“I wondered whether I would be able to pull it off. But when I see the scene now, I think it is pretty cool,” she said.
Janhvi also recalled the challenge of delivering long Telugu dialogues before a huge crowd. As Telugu is not her native language, she memorised the lines and performed the entire monologue.
The actress said the crowd began clapping immediately after the scene, giving her instant confidence.
“I think even they were surprised that I had memorised the lines and performed them,” she said, calling the applause a clear and visible form of validation.
Janhvi also spoke about living up to the legendary work ethic of her mother, late actress Sridevi.
She said she grew up hearing stories about Sridevi shooting rain songs with a high fever and continuing to dance despite bleeding feet. Those stories deeply influenced Janhvi’s approach towards cinema.
The actress added that she has now collected a few such stories from her own career and hopes to share them with her children in the future.
In Peddi, Ram Charan plays the title role, while Janhvi appears as his love interest, Achiyyamma.
The film came under fire for scenes showing Peddi forcibly kissing Achiyyamma and later presenting the moment as romance.
Following the criticism, Buchi Babu apologised and said the objectionable portions would be removed.
Despite the controversy, Peddi continues to enjoy a strong run at the box office.
