Gopichand, younger son of legendary director T Krishna, lost his father and brother at a young age. To carry forward his father’s legacy, he entered films. He debuted as hero with Tholi Valapu in 2001, but the film got mixed response. At a crossroads, director Teja cast him as villain in Jayam which marked Nithiin’s debut as hero. That role changed everything. Gopichand’s intense screen presence as antagonist earned him instant fame. He followed it with powerful villain turns in Prabhas’s blockbuster Varsham and Mahesh Babu’s critically praised Nijam. Those roles proved he could dominate even without the lead tag.
Rise As Mass Action Hero: Yagnam To Golimaar
2004 gave Gopichand his real turning point as hero with Yagnam. His rugged performance was praised and the film became a commercial hit. Then came back-to-back superhits Andhrudu and Ranam which built him a solid mass image and separate market. He balanced commercial films with content too, Okkadunnadu with Chandrasekhar Yeleti won critical acclaim for its unique plot. Later he scored more superhits with commercial entertainers like Lakshyam, Shouryam and Sankham. His collaboration with Puri Jagannadh for Golimaar as an encounter specialist became another success and strengthened his action hero brand.
Successes & Setbacks: Sahasam To Seetimaarr After a rough patch with Wanted and Mogudu, Gopichand reunited with Chandrasekhar Yeleti for Sahasam, a treasure-hunt adventure. The film won many accolades and reminded audiences of his acting range. In the last decade, despite consistent hard work, only Loukyam and Seetimaarr gave him commercial success. Even then, he kept trying different genres and stayed true to his aggressive, mass appeal. Fans respect him for never giving up and always coming back with full energy.
