Christopher Nolan’s new film The Odyssey is getting huge response in India even before release. Advance booking opened this week and the film sold more than 1.5 lakh tickets for opening weekend. This is double the pace of Oppenheimer which sold around 65,000 tickets at the same stage in 2023. Many IMAX and premium shows sold out in minutes as fans rushed to book seats. The numbers show Nolan has a strong fan base in India and people are very excited for this epic story.
Ticket prices are also making news. In Mumbai and Pune some luxury IMAX and recliner seats are priced between 1500 to 3300 rupees. Evening shows in Pune went close to 3000 rupees while top Mumbai screenings reached 3300 rupees. Delhi NCR rates are lower with recliners around 1400 rupees and morning shows starting at 370 rupees. Bengaluru IMAX tickets are 900 to 1000 rupees. In Chennai and Coimbatore rates stay near 508 rupees due to government price cap. Kolkata shows are cheaper with evening tickets below 750 rupees.
Fans have mixed reactions online about the high prices. Some say theatres are charging too much for Nolan’s film. Others feel the IMAX experience is worth the extra cost. Still, bookings remain very strong across cities. The film is shot fully with new IMAX cameras which is a first for any movie. This is expected to give a bigger and clearer picture on big screens.
