A newly opened Indian grocery store in New Jersey has gone viral for all the wrong reasons after its grand opening reportedly descended into chaos, with shoppers scrambling for discounted fruits and vegetables.
The dramatic scenes, captured in a video now circulating widely on social media, show the store packed with customers, many of them elderly, pushing past one another and hurriedly filling plastic bags with fresh produce.
As the crowd surges through the aisles, shocked voices can be heard repeatedly saying, “Oh my God.”
The nearly two-minute clip shows almost every corner of the store overflowing with shoppers eager to grab opening-day deals, creating scenes that many online users compared to a crowded Indian vegetable market.
The video has triggered a wave of reactions, with some viewers finding the chaos strangely nostalgic while others strongly criticised the behaviour.
Several users argued that such scenes reinforce negative stereotypes about Indians living abroad.
Another commented, “This is why the world is calling us senseless. They won’t do the same in American stores.”
However, others pushed back against comparisons with present-day India, arguing that shopping habits and public behaviour in the country have changed significantly.
One user wrote that Indians now increasingly rely on services such as Blinkit, Instamart, Flipkart Minutes, BigBasket and Zepto, while even many physical markets and supermarkets are far more organised than before.
Another person made a similar point, writing, “This used to happen twenty years ago… even tier 2 and tier 3 towns do not have scenes like this any more. These poor NRIs are still living in the India of the past!”
The viral clip has now sparked a wider debate over NRI behaviour, stereotypes and whether some immigrant communities continue to carry habits from an India that has itself changed dramatically over the years.
