Acclaimed director Mani Ratnam is back with a soulful love story, tentatively titled Production No. 23, marking his 23rd film under Madras Talkies
. The romantic action drama stars Vijay Sethupathi and Sai Pallavi in lead roles, their first on-screen pairing. Announced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions on March 20, 2026, the project reunites Mani Ratnam with Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, ending speculation about Sai Abhyankkar joining the film.
The script was reportedly written specifically for Vijay Sethupathi’s grounded style. Sethupathi accepted immediately, calling it “completely different” from their 2018 gangster film Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Sai Pallavi makes her debut with Mani Ratnam, a pairing the team carefully protected by bypassing other casting suggestions.
Principal photography begins in Kolkata from July 5, 2026, with a 20-day schedule in the city. Mani Ratnam has set a target to wrap the entire film in just 40-50 days, calling it a “quick project” after the scale of Thug Life and Ponniyin Selvan. The film is set in Kolkata backdrop.
The film’s digital rights were snapped up by Netflix for ₹20 crore, while Sony Music South is the audio partner. Rahman has already completed two songs. Post Thug Life’s box office setback, Mani Ratnam shifts to an intimate romantic entertainer. The film is slated for a late 2026 theatrical release.
