The social media posts shared from late filmmaker K Bhagyaraj’s official account after his death have triggered a heated controversy, with his son Shanthanu Bhagyaraj facing accusations of opportunism and even forgery from a section of netizens.
The controversy began after two letters, written on Bhagyaraj’s personal letterhead and carrying his signature, were posted online in the days following the veteran filmmaker’s death in Chennai on June 27.
The first letter was addressed directly to Bhagyaraj’s fans.
It opened with one of his personal mottos: “The greatest joy in happiness is making others happy.”
In the emotional note, Bhagyaraj thanked his fans for being the great joy of his life and described them as precious as his own eyes.
However, one particular line grabbed everyone’s attention.
The letter urged fans to transfer their love and loyalty to his son Shanthanu, saying, “In my place, I want you, as fans, to stand by Shanthanu’s success.”
The letter ended on a philosophical note, reflecting on the impermanence of the human body.
“This body has no expiry date marked on it. One day it will enter the fire, or the earth, or the cosmos,” it read.
The second letter sounded like a farewell message from beyond. It thanked those who attended his final journey with love and tears and ended with the lines, “From now on, I will live on. In good cinema, in good screenplays, in good dialogues, in good human dignities, as a spirit.”
While the letters were emotional and carried the warmth, philosophy and self-awareness often associated with Bhagyaraj’s writing, the reaction online was far from unanimous.
A section of users questioned the timing of the posts.
Some asked why Bhagyaraj’s daughter was not mentioned in the letters. Others wondered why such personal notes were being released immediately after his death.
The backlash soon turned harsher. Some social media users alleged that the letters may not have been genuinely written by Bhagyaraj and even speculated that they could have been generated using AI to imitate his writing style. However, no evidence has been offered to support these claims.
One netizen took a dig at the controversy, writing that it was fortunate Shanthanu had not “reanimated” his father through AI to recommend him for new film offers, adding that people should let the dead rest.
Much of the criticism has been directed at Shanthanu. Several users accused him of using the emotional weight of his father’s legacy to strengthen his own position in the industry.
The accusation has struck a sensitive chord because Shanthanu’s film career has long been associated with Bhagyaraj’s name.
He made his debut with Sakkarakatti in 2008, and several of his films were produced under or linked to his father’s banner.
His 2017 film Koditta Idangalai Nirappuga, directed by Parthiban, was also made as a tribute to Bhagyaraj, with Shanthanu cast in the lead because of that connection.
What began as a posthumous tribute has now become a full-blown debate on legacy, timing and emotional exploitation.
While supporters see the letters as Bhagyaraj’s final wish for his fans to stand by his son, critics believe the release has only created an avoidable controversy around a grieving family.
