Tollywood began 2026 with high expectations. A strong Sankranti lineup and several star-studded releases promised a record-breaking year
. Six months later, however, the picture is very different. More than 100 films reached theatres during the first half of the year, but only a handful emerged as commercial successes. Nearly 95% of the releases ended up as flops or loss-making ventures.
The biggest winner of the year so far is Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu. Directed by Anil Ravipudi and starring Chiranjeevi, the Sankranti release grossed over Rs 300 crore worldwide, becoming the biggest hit of the year and the highest-grossing film of Chiranjeevi’s career. Victory Venkatesh’s cameo added to the film’s appeal, while the producers and distributors enjoyed substantial profits.
June brought another success with Maa Inti Bangaram, Samantha’s comeback film directed by Nandini Reddy. The film collected around Rs 65 crore worldwide and reportedly delivered nearly three times the investment, making it the most profitable Telugu film of the first half in terms of return on investment.
Naveen Polishetty’s Anaganaga Oka Raju overcame mixed reviews to benefit from the Sankranti holiday season, while Sharwanand’s Naari Naari Naduma Murari also emerged as a profitable venture despite facing competition from bigger films.
Ram Charan’s Peddi recorded the highest worldwide gross among Telugu releases this year with around Rs 330 crore. However, its commercial performance was mixed. The film earned profits in Andhra Pradesh and reached break-even in Telangana, but underperformed in the US and Hindi markets, preventing it from being classified as a clean blockbuster.
Several other films, including Couple Friendly, Vishnu Vinyasam, Rakasa, Band Melam, and Sing Geetham, ended with average or above-average results despite receiving positive reviews.
The biggest disappointments came from high-profile releases. Prabhas’ The Raja Saab, directed by Maruthi, failed to meet expectations and became the biggest box-office disaster of the year so far. Pawan Kalyan’s Ustaad Bhagat Singh also collapsed after a poor opening and negative word-of-mouth, ending its run as one of the year’s biggest flops.
Other unsuccessful releases included Decoit, Funky, Seetha Payanam, Euphoria, Biker, Mrityunjaya, Ravi Teja’s Bhartha Mahashayulaku Vignapthi, Sathi Leelavathi, Jet Lee, Gayapadda Simham, Bad Boy Karthik, Sampradayani Suppini Suddhapusani, Saraswati, and Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi.
Dubbed films fared better in comparison. Dhurandhar 2 emerged as the biggest dubbed success in Telugu with nearly Rs 50 crore gross, while Suriya’s Veerabhadrudu, Blast and Youth also generated profits. In contrast, Drishyam 3 failed to impress Telugu audiences.
The re-release trend continued during the first half, particularly in February and May, with several classic films returning in 4K versions to mark stars’ birthdays and special occasions.
The biggest takeaway from the first six months is clear; star power alone is no longer enough. Audiences are rewarding films with strong content while rejecting weak or ordinary storytelling regardless of the cast.
Despite a few notable successes, the first half of 2026 proved to be a difficult period for Tollywood, with only a handful of films keeping the box office alive.
