The Odyssey is turning its late theatrical run into a fascinating box-office story. After overtaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day internationally during the August 28–30 weekend, Christopher Nolan’s epic came within just $146 of beating the superhero blockbuster in the North American daily chart on Monday, August 31.
The Monday numbers were almost unbelievable. Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected $1,921,191 domestically, while The Odyssey posted $1,921,045. That means the two films were separated by just $146, with Spider-Man retaining the No. 1 position by the narrowest possible margin.
What makes the result particularly striking is the difference in their theatrical runs. Brand New Day was on its 32nd day, while The Odyssey was already on its 46th day. Despite being two weeks older, Nolan’s film virtually matched one of the biggest superhero blockbusters ever made on a regular Monday. The Odyssey had a domestic cume of approximately $565.8 million after Monday, while Brand New Day had reached nearly $893.7 million.
The international weekend makes the story even more interesting. From August 28–30, The Odyssey generated approximately $48.7 million internationally, beating Brand New Day, which collected around $44 million. Globally, Spider-Man still won the weekend with about $66.2 million, compared with $63 million for Nolan’s film, but the international result shows just how strong The Odyssey continues to be this deep into its run.
South Korea has emerged as a particularly spectacular market for The Odyssey. The film added more than 1.06 million admissions over the weekend, taking its Korean total to 8.86 million and making it the most-watched foreign release of the year in the country. It also remained comfortably ahead of Brand New Day there, which added roughly 250,000 admissions over the same weekend.
The contrast between the two films is what makes the trade story compelling. Brand New Day is enjoying a historic run, having already crossed $2.33 billion worldwide and remaining No. 1 domestically for a fifth consecutive weekend. The Odyssey, meanwhile, has quietly developed exceptional legs, reaching around $1.55 billion worldwide despite being seven weekends into its theatrical journey.
