Veteran Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha member K V P Ramachandra Rao on Thursday rubbished the claim of Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan that former chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy had conspired to supress the Jana Sena Party chief politically fearing threat to the Congress.
In an open letter, KVP referred to Pawan Kalyan’s remarks that a senior police officer had informed him about an alleged political conspiracy against him during YSR’s tenure.
He dismissed the claim as “completely false.”
“As far as I remember, the then YSR government had never foisted political cases against Pawan Kalyan or targeted him and his family, let alone discussing the political strategies of such a nature with police officers,” he said.
KVP challenged that if Pawan Kalyan stands by his allegation, he should make the senior police officer he had mentioned undergo a lie-detector test.
“If the officer confirms Pawan Kalyan’s version, YSR’s admirers would contribute Rs 10 crore the CM Relief Fund as a gesture of acceptance,” he said.
The former MP also questioned the logic behind the allegation that YSR or the Congress leadership would have viewed Pawan Kalyan as a political threat during 2005-06.
“Neither Pawan Kalyan nor any member of his family was active in politics at that time. Moreover, YSR then enjoyed overwhelming public support, leaving it with no reason why YSR had to conspire against Pawan Kalyan,” he said.
KVP asserted that Pawan Kalyan’s political popularity during that period did not warrant such concerns.
“He should remember that people have not taken him seriously in politics as was evident from his electoral debacles in 2019. So, he is never any major political threat to anybody,” he said.
Recalling Pawan Kalyan’s tenure as president of Yuva Rajyam, KVP said the actor-politician had made several objectionable remarks against Congress leaders in the past, yet no cases were registered against him by the then Congress government.
He said the Congress treated such comments as immature political behaviour and expressed disappointment that Pawan Kalyan, who now projects himself as a defender of Sanatana Dharma, continues to level what he called unfounded accusations against YSR.
