The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to appoint Jana Sena Party leader and MLC Konidela Nagababu, brother of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, as Chairman of the AP GREEN Executive Committee appears to have triggered fresh political debate.
The appointment may have disappointed some Jana Sena leaders and cadres, as there had been expectations that Nagababu would eventually be inducted into the Chandrababu Naidu Cabinet.
There was also speculation that Nagababu might be sent to the Rajya Sabha and later inducted into the Narendra Modi Cabinet at the Centre.
Some had even suggested that this could be the reason why Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had not yet taken him into the State Cabinet despite earlier indications.
Finally, Nagababu has been given a Cabinet-rank post as Chairman of AP GREEN, which functions under the departments handled by his own brother, Pawan Kalyan.
Interestingly, Jana Sena leaders and the party’s social media groups have not made any major statement on the appointment so far, either welcoming it strongly or expressing disappointment.
However, the YSR Congress Party has reacted sharply.
YSRCP MLC Thota Trimurthulu criticised the development and alleged that Chandrababu Naidu had betrayed Nagababu and the Jana Sena Party.
He recalled that Naidu had earlier indicated that Nagababu would be inducted into the Cabinet, but alleged that the promise had not been fulfilled.
Trimurthulu claimed that instead of getting a ministerial berth, Nagababu had now been given a chairmanship under a department controlled by Pawan Kalyan.
He said the final decision on whether Nagababu would eventually be inducted into the Cabinet was an internal matter for the alliance partners, but alleged that Naidu had once again failed to keep his commitment.
The YSRCP has clearly seized on the issue to target the TDP-Jana Sena alliance and project that there are differences between the two parties.
Trimurthulu also alleged that replacing an expected ministerial berth with a Cabinet-rank nominated post amounted to an insult to the “Mega Brother.”
