The World Bank has reportedly expressed serious concern over the death of a worker at an Amaravati capital construction site, raising questions about compliance with labour safety standards.
A World Bank inspection team, which recently visited Amaravati as part of a periodic review, inspected the accident site at Dondapadu village.
The incident involved the collapse of a soil embankment during layout work, resulting in the death of a young labourer.
The team reviewed the site conditions and sought explanations from officials regarding the cause of the accident.
However, it reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the responses and observed that adequate worker safety measures were not being implemented in accordance with the agreed norms.
The issue has gained significance because worker safety is linked to the Disbursement Linked Indicators (DLIs) under the loan agreement with the World Bank.
The bank’s independent investigation agency has already submitted a preliminary report stating that the incident could have been avoided.
In response, the Andhra Pradesh government has constituted a two-member committee comprising the ADCL Chief Engineer and another senior official to conduct a detailed inquiry.
The committee has been asked to submit its report within a week.
The inquiry will focus on key issues, including the cause of the accident, possible lapses in safety protocols and the action taken following the incident.
