Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday inaugurated the Seed Access Road in the Amaravati capital region. He also opened a steel bridge built across the Buckingham Canal.
However, what triggered controversy on social media was the S-shaped turn on the Seed Access Road after crossing the steel bridge towards Amaravati.
Most of the Seed Access Road runs in a straight alignment, but the sharp S-curve at one particular stretch has attracted considerable attention online.
Several netizens questioned why such a curve was included when most of the road had been designed as a straight stretch. There were also allegations that the S-curve was created to avoid acquiring lands belonging to influential people close to ruling TDP leaders.
The Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, however, issued a clarification and said there was no need to believe the speculation surrounding the road alignment.
The department said the Seed Access Road was planned to improve connectivity between the Amaravati capital region, Vijayawada and Mangalagiri, while also keeping future traffic requirements in mind.
According to the government, the present alignment was designed by considering several important road connectivity projects proposed for the future.
In particular, there is a proposal to eventually connect the Seed Access Road with National Highway-16 near Manipal Hospital.
The government said the road was developed keeping this future connectivity in mind. The proposed elevated corridor between Dondapadu and Tadepalli was also taken into consideration while finalising the alignment.
Officials clarified that the Seed Access Road is being developed in three phases.
The first phase runs from Dondapadu to Venkatapalem. The second phase covers Venkatapalem to Undavalli, while the third phase is proposed from Undavalli to NH-16 near Manipal Hospital.
As part of the overall connectivity plan, a steel bridge has also been constructed across the Buckingham Canal.
Officials further said that safety and traffic management were among the reasons behind the S-shaped curve.
According to them, reverse curves can make motorists more alert, especially on stretches involving bridges, canals and future road connections.
The state government also clarified that the S-shaped alignment was not a recent change. Officials said it was part of the alignment prepared in accordance with the Amaravati Master Plan.
The current construction was planned after considering future road corridors, land requirements, connectivity and vehicle movement, the government said.
Once the Seed Access Road becomes fully operational, the government expects connectivity between Amaravati, Vijayawada and Mangalagiri to improve significantly. It is also expected to reduce traffic pressure on the Krishna river bund.
