A Kerala woman has been arrested in California in connection with the alleged murders of two other women from the state, who were reportedly her close friends.
The victims have been identified as Anjana Hari, 35, from Thrissur, and Ann Mary Mathew, 40, from Thiruvananthapuram. Their mutual friend Anila, 32, from Kottayam, has been taken into custody by police in California.
According to the victims’ families and local officials, the two women were killed within minutes of each other on August 28.
Anjana reportedly died after being struck in a hit-and-run incident in the parking lot of the Mill Creek Apartments in Milpitas.
Milpitas police said officers found a woman with serious injuries at the scene and she was pronounced dead there. Officers later located a blue SUV matching the description of the vehicle involved and arrested its 32-year-old driver.
Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
San Jose police are investigating the death as a homicide and have said that the victim and suspect knew each other.
The most shocking aspect of the case is that Anjana, Ann and Anila were reportedly close friends.
A relative of Anjana said the families were struggling to understand what could have led to the two deaths.
According to the family, the three women had recently celebrated Onam together and had also gone to watch a movie. Even their husbands reportedly do not know what may have happened between them before the incidents.
All three women were living in the United States with their husbands and children and were employed separately. Anjana worked as a school teacher, while Ann was an engineer, according to their families.
Ann had visited Kerala in June to attend her father’s 70th birthday celebration.
Her relatives said the family remains in deep shock and is waiting for more clarity from investigators.
Meanwhile, Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi said he had spoken to India’s Consul General in San Francisco regarding the repatriation of the victims’ bodies.
The Indian mission has reportedly initiated the necessary documentation, though the repatriation process could take time because both deaths are part of ongoing investigations.
For now, the biggest unanswered question is the motive.
Three Kerala women who were reportedly close friends are now at the centre of a shocking case in California — two are dead, while the third is in police custody as investigators try to piece together what happened within those crucial few minutes.
