Telangana Forests, Environment and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha on Thursday submitted her explanation to the TPCC disciplinary committee in response to the notice issued to her over remarks made by her daughter, Konda Sushmitha Patel, at an event in Warangal on Wednesday.
Surekha sent a letter containing her explanation to TPCC disciplinary committee chairman Mallu Ravi.
In her letter, the minister said that several supporters of the Konda family and Congress workers across the state had organised birthday celebrations and service activities on August 19 to mark her birthday.
She explained that her daughter, Sushmitha Patel, had attended the birthday celebrations organised by Congress workers and supporters in Geesugonda as the chief guest because of her special association with the area, which is Surekha’s native place.
Surekha clarified that the remarks made by her daughter at the programme were entirely Sushmitha’s personal views and had no connection with her own political stand.
The minister argued that family relationships could not be used as a basis to hold one person politically responsible for another person’s individual opinions. She said that seeking an explanation from her over remarks made by her daughter was therefore not appropriate.
Surekha further contended that holding her responsible for her daughter’s comments would be against the principles of natural justice.
The minister also reiterated her respect for the Congress leadership and the party’s disciplinary framework. She said she had always respected the party leadership and its disciplinary rules and had no role in the statements made by her daughter.
Against this backdrop, Surekha requested the disciplinary committee to consider the facts and democratic principles involved in the episode and withdraw the notice issued to her.
The disciplinary proceedings are significant as the Telangana Congress leadership has recently been scrutinising public statements by party leaders and their associates that could cause political embarrassment to the party or go against its official line.
Surekha’s explanation is now expected to be examined by the TPCC disciplinary committee before it decides on the next course of action.
