We are often very particular when it comes to taking care of our skin. Following a 7-step or even going for that 10-step skincare routine doesn't really bother us much. But in doing so, we often ignore one of our other body parts. The scalp, let's say, which is again a part of our skin! How many of us actually take care of or maintain a hygiene check when it comes to scalp care? I doubt that.
Basic scalp care is not just about shampooing it; it's actually much more than this. While shampooing the scalp does remove dirt and dust particles and other environmental stressors, that is not sufficient. However, the tables have now turned, and people tend to care for their scalp as much as they care for their facial skin.
Anand Bhatia, Head of Training, Lakme Salon, tells HT Shop Now, “Today, consumers are becoming increasingly aware that concerns such as hair fall, hair thinning, oiliness, dryness, product build-up and scalp sensitivity often originate at the scalp. As a result, they're looking beyond surface-level haircare and seeking dedicated solutions that support long-term scalp health”.
He further says that today there are multiple products that are designed to deeply cleanse, nourish and rebalance the scalp. These rituals create the ideal foundation for stronger, healthier-looking hair. “Just as skincare has become an essential part of everyday self-care, we believe scalp care is now emerging as the new skincare—because healthy hair truly begins with a healthy scalp”, he mentions.
On similar lines, Dermatologist Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Founder & Medical Director, Yavana Aesthetics also says, “While hair has traditionally been the focus of our grooming routines, the scalp is actually the place of origin of healthy hair. A healthy, clean scalp—free from excess oil, irritation and infections is the foundation for strong, healthy hair, which is why scalp care should be viewed as an extension of skincare”.
She also tells, “Just as we follow a consistent routine for our facial skin, the scalp too requires regular cleansing, hydration, exfoliation and protection from environmental damage. We are also seeing a growing interest in scalp-specific treatments such as scalp exfoliation, scalp peels, micro-needling, laser therapy and hydrating scalp treatments, reflecting the industry's shift towards preventive scalp health”.
Dr Agarwal also says that beyond topical products, scalp health is closely linked to internal health, making a balanced diet, adequate sleep and regular exercise equally important.
Start by figuring out whether your scalp is oily, dry, normal or combination.
Oily scalp: Look for shampoos that provide thorough cleansing and help remove excess oil and product build-up. Ingredients such as salicylic acid can be useful.
Dry scalp: Choose a gentle, moisturising shampoo that cleanses without stripping natural oils. Look for ingredients such as glycerin, panthenol or soothing botanical ingredients.
Normal scalp: A mild everyday shampoo with gentle cleansing agents is usually enough.
Combination scalp: If your roots become greasy while your lengths feel dry, focus the shampoo on the scalp and use conditioner mainly on the mid-lengths and ends.
