Former YSR Congress Party leader and ex-Rajya Sabha member V. Vijayasai Reddy on Saturday called for comprehensive reforms in government recruitment examinations, arguing that repeated allegations of irregularities at both the Central and State levels are eroding public confidence in the system.
In a social media post, Sai Reddy referred to recent allegations surrounding the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination system and linked them to the ongoing controversy over alleged irregularities in the evaluation of APPSC Group-I examinations conducted during the previous YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh.
His comments come at a time when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report into alleged irregularities in the evaluation of APPSC Group-I examinations has triggered considerable political controversy in Andhra Pradesh.
Sai Reddy said repeated concerns over irregularities in government recruitment examinations warranted a closer examination of the systems followed by both the Union and State governments.
He referred to recent cases involving allegations of misuse of quotas meant for Persons with Disabilities and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), arguing that such developments highlighted the need for stronger scrutiny of recruitment mechanisms, including the UPSC system.
According to him, problems at the State level appeared to be more widespread and persistent. He warned that when merit is undermined or reservation benefits fail to reach genuinely eligible candidates, public confidence in the entire recruitment system suffers.
Sai Reddy called for comprehensive recruitment reforms covering every stage of the selection process, from conducting examinations and declaring results to verifying eligibility and claims under various reservation categories.
He stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability at both the Central and State levels so that candidates can have confidence in the fairness and credibility of government recruitment examinations.
The former MP also urged the Narendra Modi government to make recruitment reforms a key commitment on the occasion of Independence Day.
He said a clean, credible and merit-based recruitment system is essential for building a stronger India and called for institutional mechanisms to prevent irregularities and ensure that genuine candidates receive the opportunities they are entitled to.
