Rajendra Prasad, once celebrated as one of Telugu cinema’s finest comic actors, increasingly appears to be turning himself into a laughing stock through his public speeches.
His recent appearance at a Houston Telugu association’s Golden Jubilee celebration is another example.
Instead of using the platform to speak with dignity, he reportedly tried to create humour by mocking Telugu association rivalries, making wordplay around TANA, ATA, BATA and TANTA, and suggesting that people should clap for his joke.
What may have been intended as comedy reportedly left many on stage and in the audience uncomfortable.
He also made a joke about the pronunciation of “San Jose,” apparently assuming it would get a laugh. However, the joke fell completely flat, and not even the audience could manage a smile.
The larger problem is not that Rajendra Prasad attempts humour. Comedy was his strength earlier because of the writers and directors who worked for him in films.
The problem now is that he seems unable to make out that a joke that works in a film or on a table may sound in bad taste, forced or embarrassing at a formal public event. That calculation has to work in his mind.
Moreover, he repeatedly warned both the audience and those on stage to remain silent and pay attention while he was speaking.
His behavior, speech, and overall demeanor came across as disrespectful, leaving many Telugu NRIs feeling that spending such a large amount to bring him to the event was simply a waste of money.
At this stage, Rajendra Prasad needs restraint more than applause. Silence or very calculated speech may protect the dignity that his career has earned him.
At this point, after listening to his speeches and observing his behavior on stage, some people have begun to wonder whether he is struggling with a personal or professional identity crisis.
Well, only solace for Houston Telugu people is that he did not use any vulgar words this time, like he did on couple of ocacssions on Indian stages.
