Iranian state media has mocked US President Donald Trump after reports revealed that he secretly switched aircraft during a recent visit to Turkey over a security threat.
Iranian television presenters claimed the episode showed how seriously the US was taking threats linked to Iran and described the incident as an embarrassment for Trump.
According to reports, the US Secret Service received information about a possible threat to Air Force One involving a shoulder-fired missile. The threat reportedly emerged during the final day of Trump’s visit to Ankara for a NATO summit.
Officials are said to have considered the threat credible enough to take extraordinary security measures.
Reports said Trump and a small group of aides were secretly moved from Air Force One to a smaller government aircraft. A catering truck was reportedly used as part of the operation to conceal his movements.
Air Force One later departed separately carrying senior officials, White House staff and members of the travelling press.
The New York Times reported that US officials were also concerned after learning that Iranian operatives allegedly knew where Trump was staying in Ankara, including the floor of his hotel.
Iran has not officially commented on those allegations or confirmed any involvement in the reported threat.
However, Iranian state-linked accounts and media outlets used the incident to mock Trump.
Iran’s embassy in South Africa posted a meme on X showing Trump inside a food container and wrote that he “will be hidden in a trash can before long.”
The post quickly attracted attention on social media and was also picked up by Iranian state media.
Anti-US and anti-Israel billboards and murals have also appeared across Tehran amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States.
The latest episode comes against the backdrop of earlier allegations by the US that Iran had plotted to target Trump.
In 2024, the US Justice Department charged an Iranian man over an alleged plot linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to assassinate Trump. Tehran denied those accusations.
Analysts say Iranian hardliners are now using the reported plane-switch episode to argue that Washington is deeply concerned about Iran’s military and intelligence capabilities.
The incident has also revived discussion about the extreme security precautions surrounding US presidents during visits to sensitive regions.
Trump himself had previously spoken about travelling under extraordinary security during a 2018 visit to Iraq, where his aircraft reportedly flew with lights off and windows darkened.
For now, Iran appears to be using the latest incident mainly as a propaganda opportunity, while US officials continue to treat the reported security threat as a serious matter.
