Former MLA and senior Anantapur politician B. Gurnath Reddy, who was among the leaders who stood by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy when he left the Congress and launched his own political party, is reportedly preparing to join the Jana Sena Party. Gurnath Reddy has had a long association with the YSR family in Anantapur. He won the Anantapur Assembly seat as a Congress candidate in 2009.
He later resigned from the Congress and contested the 2012 by-election on a YSR Congress Party ticket, winning with a substantial majority.
After losing the 2014 election, Gurnath Reddy reportedly stayed away from the YSRCP for some time due to differences with the party leadership. He rejoined the party in December 2018.
According to party sources, Gurnath Reddy had returned to the YSRCP after assurances given during his earlier move to the TDP were reportedly not fulfilled.
However, his political prominence declined after the 2019 elections, when YSRCP candidate Anantha Venkatarami Reddy won the Anantapur Assembly seat. With the YSRCP in power, Gurnath Reddy reportedly did not make any major political move.
In the 2024 elections, Anantha Venkatarami Reddy again contested from the constituency but lost. TDP candidate Daggubati Venkateswara Prasad won the seat.
Several political developments have taken place in Anantapur over the past two years. A few months ago, there was speculation that Gurnath Reddy might join the Jana Sena Party.
He is now reportedly preparing to formally join the party in the presence of Jana Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
According to his supporters, Gurnath Reddy is expected to meet Pawan Kalyan on August 25 and join Jana Sena along with a large number of supporters.
YSRCP leaders, however, maintain that Gurnath Reddy has already been keeping away from active party affairs.
His proposed move to Jana Sena could assume significance in the context of the party’s efforts to expand its organisational presence and political base in the Anantapur region.
