Former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA and former government whip Rega Kantha Rao was arrested by Panjagutta police in Bengaluru on Thursday in connection with a sexual harassment case filed by a 22-year-old woman.
Police reportedly took the former MLA into custody based on a complaint in which the woman alleged that he had sexually harassed her after promising to marry her.
According to the complaint, the woman alleged that Kantha Rao had sexually assaulted her over a period of nearly four years after gaining her trust with a promise of marriage. She further alleged that he harassed her when she resisted his advances.
The woman also alleged that Kantha Rao had promised to help her set up a social media channel and used that as a pretext to sexually exploit her.
She further alleged that he had recorded her private photographs and videos and later threatened to make them public, using them to allegedly blackmail and intimidate her.
The complainant also alleged that Rs 4 lakh was collected from her on the pretext of investing in a real estate business.
Based on her complaint, Panjagutta police registered a case under several sections on July 26.
A special police team reportedly travelled to Bengaluru and, with the help of technical evidence, traced and detained Kantha Rao before bringing him back to Hyderabad.
The arrest has attracted considerable political attention in Telangana, given Kantha Rao’s previous position as an MLA and government whip.
Kantha Rao, however, has denied the allegations. He had recently approached the Telangana High Court seeking to quash the case registered against him at the Panjagutta police station.
In his petition, he reportedly claimed that the woman had filed a false complaint against him and alleged that it was part of a conspiracy to damage his political and personal reputation.
He sought the quashing of the criminal proceedings against him, maintaining that the allegations were false.
