Running out of storage often triggers the same ritual: open Google Photos, select hundreds of old pictures and start deleting. But there is one important detail Android users should understand before tapping the trash icon. Deleting a photograph through Google Photos isn't necessarily the same as simply removing a spare copy from your phone, and getting it wrong could mean losing photographs from more places than expected.What actually happens when you hit delete on Google Photos?Google makes the distinction clear in its support documentation. Open Google Photos, tap your profile picture and select Free up space on this device. Google says the feature identifies photos and videos that have been safely backed up before removing eligible local copies from the phone. The pictures remain available through Google Photos and its website. There is an important catch: after those local copies are removed, they won't be available through the phone's regular gallery while offline. Google therefore explicitly advises users to make sure their photographs have been properly backed up before freeing space.'Delete from device' does something differentUsers who want to remove an individual photograph from their Android phone but retain its backed-up Google Photos version have another option. Select the photograph, tap More and choose Delete from device. Google's documentation lists this separately from moving an image to Trash, making it important to check exactly which button you're pressing. There is also an Undo backup option for the opposite situation: removing a device's backed-up content from Google Photos while keeping the files on the phone. Android Authority reported the feature's arrival on Android in 2025, noting that it gives users greater control over cloud storage.Deleted something accidentally? Don't wait too longThere may still be time to recover a mistake. Google says backed-up photos and videos generally remain in Trash for 60 days, while unbacked-up items deleted on Android 11 or later remain there for 30 days.
