The proceedings in the Telangana cash-for-vote case have effectively returned to square one, with the Supreme Court on Thursday deciding that the matter will have to be heard afresh following the retirement of the judges who had earlier heard the case.
The petitions related to the case came up for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant on Thursday.
The matter concerns petitions filed by Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and BRS leader Sandra Venkata Veeraiah in connection with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) investigation into the cash-for-vote case and the broader legal issues surrounding the probe.
BRS leaders had also impleaded themselves in the proceedings.
The case had reached the stage of final hearing before the earlier bench. However, with the judges who were hearing the matter retiring, the proceedings could not continue from the stage at which they had stopped.
As a result, the petitions came before the Chief Justice-led bench as a “part-heard” matter.
Justice Surya Kant made it clear that the case would now be treated as a fresh matter and heard from the beginning.
With the Supreme Court deciding to restart the hearing, the proceedings are expected to once again examine the legal questions surrounding the ACB investigation and the petitions filed by the political leaders involved in the case.
The Chief Justice-led bench subsequently adjourned the matter.
